Acrylic sheet

Acrylic is the clear plastic sheet most people picture when they think of Perspex. It is lighter than glass, much harder to break, and comes clear, opal, tinted, solid coloured and as mirror. Plastics Hub NZ supplies acrylic as flat sheet to trade and DIY customers across New Zealand.

Tell us the thickness, colour, sheet size and how many you need, and we'll come back with a quote.

What is Acrylic?

Acrylic is polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a rigid thermoplastic. It is made two ways. Cast acrylic is poured between plates, which gives a hard surface that machines and polishes well and suits display work. Extruded acrylic is pushed through a die, which gives very even thickness and a lower cost, and suits glazing and general use.

Mirror acrylic is acrylic sheet with a reflective coating on the back face. It is lighter and far less likely to shatter than glass mirror, which is why it is used in gyms, kids' rooms, shopfronts and displays.

Key properties

  • Very clear

Clear acrylic lets through more light than ordinary glass and stays clear for years outdoors. Cut edges can be polished back to a glass-like finish.

  • Light and break resistant

About half the weight of glass, and much more resistant to breaking. It can still crack under a hard impact, so for areas that get knocked about, look at polycarbonate.

  • Easy to work

Acrylic cuts with saws and routers, drills with the right bit and joins with solvent cement into near-invisible joints. Thin sheet can be scored and snapped.

  • Weathers well

Acrylic resists sunlight better than most clear plastics, so it suits outdoor signs and glazing. If a job needs a stated UV performance, confirm the grade with us.

  • Heat limits

Acrylic softens at a lower temperature than polycarbonate. Keep it away from cooktops, heaters and other direct heat sources.

How it compares

Acrylic and polycarbonate look almost the same on the shelf. Acrylic is clearer, harder on the surface and easier to glue; polycarbonate is far tougher. For thin, cheaper display and packaging work, PETG is another option that bends without cracking.

Acrylic questions

Is acrylic the same as Perspex?
Perspex is a well-known brand name for acrylic sheet, and in New Zealand the two words are often used for the same thing. Plastics Hub NZ supplies acrylic sheet; if your job names a particular brand or grade, tell us when you ask for a quote.
Should I choose cast or extruded acrylic?
Cast acrylic suits display work, laser engraving and anything that will be polished or closely inspected. Extruded acrylic has very even thickness and suits glazing and general use. If you are not sure, tell us what the sheet is for and we'll recommend one.
Do you supply mirror acrylic?
Yes. Mirror acrylic is part of our acrylic range, in silver and some colours. It is much lighter than glass mirror and far less likely to shatter.
Can you cut acrylic to size?
Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with your sizes and we'll confirm.
Can acrylic go outdoors?
Yes, acrylic weathers well and is widely used for outdoor signs and glazing. If your job needs a stated UV or weathering performance, confirm the grade with us before ordering.
