Acrylic mirror sheet

Acrylic mirror is acrylic sheet with a reflective coating on the back. It is around half the weight of a glass mirror and far less likely to shatter, which is why it is used in gyms, dance studios, children's rooms, shopfitting, signage and craft work.

Plastics Hub NZ supplies the sheet; fitting is done by you or your installer. Need a sheet cut down? Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with your sizes and we'll confirm.

Flatness matters

Acrylic mirror is flexible, so it only reflects without distortion when it is fixed flat. Mount it on a flat, rigid backing or wall; over a large area, a bowed sheet gives a fairground reflection.

Fixing

Use a mirror adhesive or mounting tape that says it is safe for acrylic mirror backing. Some adhesives attack the coating and show through as dark spots. Screws need oversized holes drilled with bits made for plastics.

Scratches

The face is softer than glass. Keep the protective film on until the sheet is fixed, and clean with a soft cloth and a cleaner made for plastics, never a dry or abrasive cloth.

Heat and damp

Keep acrylic mirror away from heaters and direct heat. In a bathroom, seal the edges as the adhesive maker recommends so moisture does not get behind the coating.

Questions

Is acrylic mirror as good as glass mirror?
Fixed flat, it gives a clear reflection, though not quite the optical precision of glass. Its strengths are weight and safety: it is lighter and much less likely to break.
How do I cut acrylic mirror?
Thin sheet scores and snaps like other acrylic, and thicker sheet cuts with a fine-tooth saw. Cut with the mirror face up and the film on, so the coating on the back is not scratched.
