HDPE rod
HDPE rod is solid round bar in high-density polyethylene. It is light, tough, cheap next to the other engineering plastics, and it does not rot, rust or swell in water.
Plastics Hub NZ supplies HDPE rod in a range of diameters and lengths. Tell us the diameter, length, colour and quantity, and we'll come back with a quote.

Request a quoteWhat is HDPE rod?
HDPE is a thermoplastic with a waxy, slightly slippery surface. It does not absorb water, does not rot and resists a wide range of chemicals, and it can be cut, drilled, routed and welded with ordinary tools and techniques.
Marine-grade HDPE board is HDPE made for outdoor use, with UV stabilisation and a textured finish. It is sold as part of our HDPE range rather than as a separate material.

Key properties
Tough and impact resistant
HDPE flexes rather than shattering and keeps its toughness in the cold.
Chemical and moisture resistant
It resists water, many acids, alkalis and cleaning chemicals, and does not rot or corrode.
Easy to clean
The smooth, non-absorbent surface wipes down easily, which is why it is common in food areas. Food-contact grades exist; confirm the grade with us if yours needs one.
Easy to work
HDPE cuts, drills and routs cleanly and can be plastic welded. It is very hard to glue, so joints are usually welded or fixed mechanically.
Moves with temperature
HDPE expands and contracts more than wood or metal, so long panels need slotted fixing holes.
Typical uses
- Bushes and spacers
Low-load bushes, spacers and washers that sit in water or wash-down areas.
- Rollers and guides
Light rollers, guides and buffers where low cost matters more than precision.
- Marine and outdoor parts
Parts that live outdoors or in salt water, where metal would corrode.
Forms, thicknesses and sheet sizes
What HDPE rod commonly comes in. What we can source for you is confirmed on your quote.
- Forms
- Flat sheet and solid round rod. Marine-grade HDPE comes as sheet.
- Rod
- Solid rod in a wide range of diameters, commonly supplied in lengths of 1 to 3 metres.
- Common colours
- Natural, white, black, and colours such as blue, green and yellow for colour-coded boards and marine work.
How it compares
HDPE and UHMWPE are both polyethylene. UHMWPE wears far better and slides more easily, and costs more; HDPE is the cheaper all-rounder. Polypropylene is a little stiffer and handles more heat, which suits tanks and chemical work.
How to order
- Send us an enquiry through the quote form or email trade@plasticshub.co.nz.
- Tell us the rod diameter, length, colour and quantity, and the town or city it is going to.
- We'll come back with a quote, including delivery.
Need it cut? Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with your sizes and we'll confirm.
HDPE rod questions
- Can HDPE be glued?
- Not reliably with ordinary adhesives. HDPE joints are usually plastic welded, or fixed mechanically with screws or bolts through slotted holes.
- Can you cut HDPE to size?
- Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with your sizes and we'll confirm.
