Nylon rod
Nylon rod is tough, hard-wearing round bar that takes shock loads well. It is turned into bushes, rollers, sheaves and gears, often to replace bronze or steel.
Plastics Hub NZ supplies nylon rod in extruded and cast grades. Tell us the diameter, length, grade if you know it, colour and quantity, and we'll come back with a quote.

Nylon is polyamide (PA). Extruded nylon, often PA6 or PA66, is the general-purpose grade. Cast nylon is made in moulds and suits larger diameters and thicker plate, and is often chosen for bigger wear parts.
Natural nylon is cream coloured. Black and other colours are made, and some grades include oil or other additives to reduce friction.

Key properties
Tough
Nylon absorbs shock and impact well and resists fatigue, so it suits parts under repeated load.
Good wear resistance
It wears well against metal and is often used to replace bronze bushes and steel wear pads.
Absorbs moisture
Nylon takes up some water and can swell slightly. For wet duty with tight tolerances, acetal may suit better.
Machines well
Nylon turns, mills and drills well with sharp tools.
Oils and fuels
It resists oils, greases and fuels, but not strong acids.
Typical uses
- Bushes and bearings
Replacing bronze in lower-speed duty.
- Rollers, sheaves and wheels
Quiet, tough running parts.
- Gears and sprockets
Where shock loads are expected.
Forms, thicknesses and sheet sizes
What Nylon rod commonly comes in. What we can source for you is confirmed on your quote.
- Forms
- Solid round rod and flat sheet (plate).
- Rod
- Extruded rod in smaller to medium diameters and cast rod in larger diameters, commonly in lengths of 1 to 3 metres.
- Common colours
- Natural (cream) and black, with some grades in blue or green.
How it compares
Nylon is tougher than acetal and better under shock; acetal is stiffer and more stable in the wet. For heavy sliding wear on large areas, UHMWPE is usually cheaper and wears better.
How to order
- Send us an enquiry through the quote form or email trade@plasticshub.co.nz.
- Tell us the rod diameter and length, cast or extruded if you know, the colour and quantity, and the town or city it is going to.
- We'll come back with a quote, including delivery.
Need it cut? Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with your sizes and we'll confirm.
Nylon rod questions
- What is the difference between cast and extruded nylon?
- Extruded nylon is the general-purpose grade in smaller sizes. Cast nylon is made in moulds, suits larger diameters and thicker plate, and is often chosen for bigger wear parts. Tell us the size and duty and we'll suggest one.
- Can nylon replace bronze bushes?
- Often, yes, in lower-speed and moderate-load duty. Check the load, speed and temperature with your designer or engineer first.
- Can you cut nylon to length or size?
- Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with your sizes and we'll confirm.
