Acrylic sheet for kitchen splashbacks

Acrylic is a popular kitchen splashback sheet because it is light, easy to clean and comes in clear, opal and solid colours. Clear sheet can be painted on the back for a glass look at a fraction of the weight, and the same acrylic splashback sheet suits bathrooms and laundries.

Plastics Hub NZ supplies the sheet; fitting is done by you or your installer. Need a sheet cut down? Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with the sizes you need and we'll confirm.

Not directly behind a cooktop

Acrylic softens with heat. Behind a gas or electric cooktop use glass, stainless steel or tile, and follow the cooktop maker's clearance. Acrylic suits the rest of the wall, sinks, vanities and laundries.

Choosing the sheet

Solid-colour and opal sheet hide the wall behind and the adhesive. Clear sheet is back-painted, or used over a printed or painted wall. Thicker sheet sits flatter over a slightly uneven wall.

Fixing

Use an adhesive or neutral-cure silicone that is rated for acrylic, applied in vertical beads, and leave a small gap at the edges for movement. Solvent-based adhesives can craze the sheet.

Cleaning

Warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent or ammonia cleaners, which scratch or craze acrylic.

Guides

Questions

Is acrylic or glass better for a splashback?
Glass handles heat and is the right choice behind a cooktop. Acrylic is lighter, easier to handle and much less likely to break during installation, so it suits sinks, vanities, laundries and walls away from heat.
Can you cut the splashback to size for me?
Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with the sizes you need and we'll confirm. Or see our guide to cutting acrylic yourself.
