PVC foam board

PVC foam board is rigid PVC sheet with a fine foamed core and a smooth, closed surface. It is light, stiff and easy to cut and print, so sign makers, shopfitters, exhibition builders and model makers use it for panels, displays and backing boards. Foamex is a brand name, and in New Zealand it is often used for any PVC foam board.

Plastics Hub NZ supplies the sheet. Need a sheet cut down? Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with your sizes and we'll confirm.

Printing

The smooth white face takes direct UV flatbed print, screen print, paint and vinyl. It is one of the most common substrates for indoor signs and point-of-sale.

Cutting

Thin board cuts with a sharp utility knife and a steel rule in a few passes. Thicker board cuts with a fine-tooth saw or a router.

Joining

PVC foam bonds with PVC solvent cement or a contact adhesive rated for PVC, and takes screws if they are not too close to the edge.

Indoors and out

PVC foam does not rot or absorb much water, so it can go outside, but it softens with heat and dark colours can bow in full sun. White and light colours suit outdoor and veranda signs best.

Questions

Is PVC foam board the same as Foamex?
Foamex is a brand of PVC foam board. People often use the name for any PVC foam sheet, but makers' boards differ in density and surface, so compare the board, not the name.
PVC foam or corflute for a sign?
Corflute is lighter and cheaper for temporary signs. PVC foam is smoother, flatter and more solid, so it looks better for indoor signs and displays.
