ACM (aluminium composite) sheet for signs

ACM, also sold as ACP or aluminium composite panel, is two thin aluminium skins bonded to a plastic core. It is the standard rigid sign board in New Zealand: flat, light for its stiffness, weather-resistant and easy to print, so it carries shopfront, site, real estate and wayfinding signs that need to last for years.

Plastics Hub NZ supplies blank sheet to sign makers, printers and anyone making their own signs. We do not print or install signs.

ACM and ACP are the same thing

Aluminium composite material (ACM) and aluminium composite panel (ACP) are two names for the same sheet. Brand names vary between makers, so compare the skin thickness, core type and finish rather than the name.

Printing and finishing

The painted face takes direct UV flatbed print and vinyl well. White gloss and matt are the usual sign faces. Ask your printer which face finish and colour they want for the job before you order.

Outdoors

Aluminium skins do not rot, swell or rust, so ACM suits long-term outdoor signs. How long the graphics last depends on the print, the inks and any laminate, so discuss UV life with your printer.

Fixing

Screws with washers, rivets, sign rails, standoffs or a VHB-type tape rated for painted aluminium. Drill clearance holes for the fixings so the panel can move a little with heat.

Signs, not cladding

This page is about sign panels. ACM used as building cladding is a separate specification question about core type and fire performance, for your designer or builder to settle.

Questions

What is the difference between ACM and ACP?
Nothing: they are two names for aluminium composite sheet. ACM stands for aluminium composite material and ACP for aluminium composite panel.
How do I cut ACM sheet?
Thin ACM can be scored deeply with a utility knife along a steel rule and snapped. Thicker sheet and shapes are cut with a fine-tooth saw or a router. Keep the protective film on while you cut. Need it cut for you? Cutting is available on certain materials at certain depots. Request a quote with your sizes and we'll confirm.
ACM or corflute for a sign?
Corflute for short-term and temporary signs, where light weight and low cost matter most. ACM for permanent signs that must stay flat and look sharp for years.
