Nylon questions we are asked in Masterton
- Does nylon absorb moisture?
- Yes — nylon takes up moisture from the air and grows slightly as it does, typically a few tenths of a percent. Machine parts allowing for that growth, or specify acetal where dimensional stability is critical.
- Nylon or acetal for a bearing?
- Nylon carries higher loads and absorbs shock better, so it suits heavily loaded bushes and wear pads. Acetal is dimensionally stable and lower friction, which makes it the better choice for precision moving parts.
- What is the maximum operating temperature for nylon?
- Cast nylon runs continuously to around 100°C, with short-term excursions higher. Above that, PTFE or a filled grade is the safer specification.
